BMW are set to show case a new, sporty electric car at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new BMW ‘i4′ car will probably be based on the BMW i3 electric city car and will be a touch more of a “fasionable and sporty” model. The name i4 comes from BMW’s new naming strategy, that keeps odd numbers for basic sedans and hatchbacks. The i4 will will basically be pivoted on the i3 electric compact, but it will feature a lower roof and two fewer doors.

Generally, for a sportier model, it would also go for a higher price than the i3 hatchback. It’s already estimated to cost more than $50,000 in Europe. The 2014 BMW i3 is fitted with a carbon reinforced plastic chassis in order to reduce the weight of a heavy battery pack. BMW says the new i4 will be able to accelerate from 0-62 mph performance of under 8 seconds. It is also a 170-horsepower electric motor.

Not many details have been released about the car’s range, but BMW has announced that the i3 would also be offered with a range-extending option. This is likely to be a small 600cc twin-cylinder gasoline engine. BMW is yet to confirm the i4 model. I hope it gets confirmed and produced soon because I’m really looking forward to BMW’s electric sub brand, a sporty pure electric convertible would be fantastic.
