Lamborghini, an italian car manufacturer made an agreement with BMW to build a race car in the late 70’s. The car was made for racing in both 4-th and 5-th groups. According to the rules, not all cars on the road were allowed to participate in the race. Only those cars that are produced in quantities of at not less than 400 pieces for 2 straight years. Clearly, the growing buisness of BMW Motorsport GmbH was not enough to independently make and design a car.

When the BMW M1 Hommage concept was seen, people immediately began to ask when BMW were going to officially release a producted version. A member from BMW board, said that they have no plans to produce a supercar that will be able to go head to head with the new Audi R8. The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981. It’s body was designed by Giugiaro, and was inspired by the 1972 BMW Turbo show car.

BMW commissioned lamborghini originally, to assemble prototypes, work out the details of the car’s chassis and manufacture the vehicles. Lamborghini’s financial position meant that BMW once again took control over the project in April 1978, not too long after seven new prototypes were made. Only 456 M1s were producted, making it one of BMW’s rarest models. The spirit of the M1 lived on in the first-generation M5, the M635Csi which had very similar engines.
