The BMW 328 is a sports vehicle manufactured by BMW between 1936 and 1940. The body design was credited to Peter Szymanowski, whom after World War II, became BMW chief of design. The BMW 328 was announced as one of 25 finalists for Car of the Century in 1999, by a worldwide group of car journalists. The BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupe became the first car to ever win both the Mille Miglia (1940) and today’s classical version of the race.

The BMW 328 became a class winner of Mille Miglia, in 1938. The manufacturing plant where the 328 had been built found itself in the Russian zone. Later automobile manufacturing in Eisenach would be controlled by a state path until German Reunification in 1989. BMW’s technical plans for the car and one of the Mille Miglia 328s were taken from the bombed BMW factory by English men from the Bristol Aeroplane Company and Frazer Nash companies.

Bristol Cars was built to make complete cars, called Bristols. The company and would also provide engines for all Fraiser Nash’s post-war cars. The 400, was the first bristol car. It was mainly based on the BMW plans. This 1940 BMW broke a record that the company says acknowledges today, running the 1000-mile race at an average speed of of 104 mph.
