The BMW 8 Series is a 2-door V8- or V12-engined coupe made by BMW from 1989 to 1999. Actually, it was a completely new class pointed at a different market, with a much higher price than the 6 series. It is for this reason that it performed better. It was BMW’s flagship car and had a maximum speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The 850i BMW 850i/Ci M70 V12 engine was the first model to be launched in 1990 with the 5 litre M70B50 V12 engine.

Design and construction of the 8 Series began in 1986. The 8 Series was first publicly seen, in early September 1989 at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) . It was created to pass the market of the original 6 Series. The 8 Series super car came with the first ever V-12 engine placed in a 6-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was also among first vehicles to be engaged with an electronic “fly-by-wire” throttle.

Together with the Z1, the 8 Series was one of BMW’s first cars, to use a multi-link back axle. Global recession affected sales of the 8 Series. In 1997, BMW got the 8 Series out of the North American market because they sold only 7,232 cars in seven years. BMW then resumed production for Europe until 1999. The total worldwide production number was 31,062.
