BMW Company has confirmed rumors about a release of i8 open version

In an interview with the German Handelsblatt edition, the Chief of BMW Harald Krueger informed that the sporty hybrid BMW i8 will receive an open version named i8 Spyder. This novelty will be built after the fashion of the concept car that was first shown at the 2012Beijing motor show. The prototype has got a short wheelbase, rear translucent sloping roof and a windscreen with a large spoiler.

Most likely, technical specifications of i8 open version will not differ from the coupe. It is expected that under model’s hood a driver will find a power unit consisting of 1.5-liter 231 hp petrol motor that transmits the torque of 320 Nm to rear wheels and 131-horsepower electric engine, which gives the torque to the front wheels. A total capacity of the i8 hybrid makes 362 horsepower. As for dynamic characteristics of the sport car, the new model will need 4.4 seconds to get 100 km / h and a top speed is limited electronically to 250 km / h. The vehicle consumes only 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

Next year, BMW plans to present “charged” version of i8. The car will be more powerful, but keep the same weight (1485 kg). According to preliminary data, the model will be called i8S.
