The appearance of the serial hybrid BMW i8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013 amused the audience by 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine borrowed from the MINI. However, the model has become extremely popular, and BMW is going to consolidate its success by the release of the new open version.

Release of BMW i8 Spyder has been repeatedly reaffirmed and postponed to a later date, but this time the chairman of the Board of Directors, Harald Krueger, confirmed that the roadster will appear in 2018. It is not clear whether the car will belong to 2018 or 2019 model year. Release of the novelty coincides with the release of restyled coupe i8 and the appearance of the upgraded power trains, so the open version will also receive external and mechanical upgrades. It should also be noted that a prototype of BMW i8 Spyder was already spotted with removable roof panels in August at the Nürburgring. Perhaps, the production model will be deprived of the rear seats to make space for the removable top.
